A semi off-road caravan sits between a standard touring van and a full off-road caravan. It’s built with stronger materials, upgraded suspension, higher ground clearance, and all-terrain tyres. This means it can comfortably handle gravel roads, corrugations, bush tracks, and coastal access routes — places a touring van shouldn’t go. However, it’s not intended for extreme four-wheel drive tracks or the harshest outback conditions. For many travellers, a semi off-road van offers the perfect mix of durability, comfort, and easier towing.
The main difference comes down to how rugged the van is built and where you plan to take it. Semi off-road caravans are designed for light to moderate off-road conditions, such as unsealed roads, farm tracks, and national park campsites. They give you more freedom than a road van but are still lighter and easier to tow. Full off-road caravans, on the other hand, are built to tackle harsher terrain — think deep corrugations, river crossings, or remote desert tracks — with reinforced chassis, heavy-duty suspension, and often a higher weight rating. Choosing between the two depends on how adventurous your travels will be.
Yes — the SCT17 is a lightweight semi off-road caravan. Its single axle design keeps weight down and makes it easier to tow and manoeuvre, while still offering the strength needed for semi off-road travel. Built with German-engineered composite walls, it delivers excellent durability and insulation without unnecessary bulk. The SCT17’s compact, narrow body design also allows access to tighter campsites, giving couples the freedom to enjoy adventures that bigger, heavier vans can’t easily reach.
