Frequently Asked Questions

How long has Swag Camper Trailers been building campers, hybrid and off-road caravans?

Kerry Stacey established SWAG Camper Trailers in 2008. Kerry is still the owner and you can see him around the Sunshine Coast workshop most days. He’s proud that SWAG Camper Trailers is still 100% Australian family owned and operated.

SWAG is a National Company with showrooms in Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia. To find your nearest showroom please go to our Find A Showroom page.

Great question, and we’d like to give you as much information as possible. To read the full story about our design, engineering and build process, please go to the Our Story page.

Yes, it is mandatory that an Electronic Brake Controller is installed to your tow vehicle in accordance with the Road Safety Regulations in Australia.

Yes, a properly designed and fitted tow bar is essential for safe towing. Your tow bar load capacity must be at least equal to the trailer’s loaded mass. The tow bar tongue should not have braces or gussets and should be rated to 350 kg.

Yes, in the unfortunate event that your tow hitch fails, the D shackles will be the only things connecting your van to your vehicle and preventing it from hurtling off on its own.

In order to tow safely and legally, you must tow within your vehicle’s towing capacity. The towing capacity is the maximum amount of weight your vehicle is able to tow, and the maximum ball weight, as recommended by the manufacturer. This information is available in your vehicle owner’s manual or via vehicle specifications information, located on the manufacturer’s website.

Please note: when calculating the towing capacity, you must take the vehicle’s onboard load into account eg. passengers, luggage, and equipment.

Yes, they are perfectly suited for the beach or bush. All SWAG campers, hybrids and off-road caravans come equipped with a single piece galvanised chassis and our off-road suspension system, featuring heavy-duty springs and off-road shocks. Our range of caravans are specifically engineered for use on the gazetted roads and tracks in Australia. However, it is important to emphasise that you must drive responsibly and adapt to the prevailing conditions. Please be aware that negligence, misuse or regular wear and tear are not eligible for claims under SWAG’s warranty conditions.

If work is required on your caravan and you believe it is covered under our warranty, you should immediately go to our warranty page and submit a warranty claim. Please note, when submitting a warranty claim it is important to include as much detail as possible. This will assist us in making a prompt and informed assessment.

A shakedown test comprises 2-3 short trips taken close to home. The purpose of the shakedown is to thoroughly assess all the systems and features of your new camper and resolve any potential issues that may arise.

Yes, as mentioned above, we recommend doing 2-3 short trips (shakedowns) where you test every feature and system in your camper thoroughly. Pressure test the plumbing, assess the electrical components under load, set up the annexe, test the hot water system, prepare meals and rigorously test items such as doors, latches and locks. This in-depth testing not only resolves any potential issues, it instils you with a better understanding of your camper and provides the confidence to head out on more adventurous journeys. Please understand, all our campers, hybrids and off-road caravans are assembled right here on the Sunshine Coast by our dedicated team. But we are only human, and despite our best efforts we acknowledge the potential for minor issues. So please, take your time during these shakedown trips, test everything thoroughly, enjoy the experience, and if any issues should arise, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Maintaining the correct tyre pressure will maximise the life of the tyres, reduce vibration through the caravan and improve stability. Over inflating tyres increases the risk of punctures, transfers more vibration to the caravan which can cause instability and sway while under tow.

Please note: There are a number of good, free tyre pressure calculators online that take load, caravan length, number of wheels and tyre information into consideration when calculating correct tyre pressure. When tyre pressures are low you risk popping the bead off the rim.

This is a general guide only:

  • Highway driving – 48 to 55 psi
  • Dusty road – 30 to 35 psi
  • Light corrugation – 25 to 28 psi
  • Moderate corrugation – 22 to 25 psi
  • Bad corrugation – 18 to 22psi (Remember, on heavily corrugated or rocky roads you must slow down and drive to the conditions)
  • Sand – 14 – 20psi (On sand you can go as low as 14psi, but remember please drive to the conditions)

This could be:

  • An air lock – please run all taps to flush the lines of any air.
  • A small leak – please check all John Guest fittings are secure and there are no small leaks which are reducing the pressure.
  • Pump pressure need to be adjusted –
    • There is a Hex Head or Allen Key screw at the centre of the pressure switch.
    • Turning clockwise in small increments will increase pressure and reduce cycling.
    • It is best to run the pump and taps are each adjustment to check pressure build up.
    • It is also recommended to bleed any air locks in the lines first.
    • Do not turn anti-clockwise as this will decrease pressure and increase flow (this is not recommended).
SWAG Camper Trailers use a 6-stud wheel pattern, which is the same as the 80 Series Toyota Landcruiser.
This is a common 6-stud wheel pattern found on many Toyota trucks and 4x4s.
SWAG Camper Trailers use 5/8′ studs.
This is a common stud size for trailer wheels and hubs in Australia.
For wheel bearings and seals on a Swag Hybrid Caravans & Campers, you should use seals with a thickness of 9.52mm or 0.37 inches.
The numbers are:
  1. Large bearing NSK: 25580/20RNSK
  2. Small bearing NSK: 15123/245RNSK
  3. Rotary Seal NBR: RS22533737LNC
The bearing set is available for purchase on the SWAG Off-Road Campers Website and includes the inner and outer bearing and seals.
Yes, but the aftermarket wheels must be load-rated to ensure they can safely support the trailer weight and payload.
Please note – Proper load rating is critical for off-road and heavy-duty use.

Imitation is the Sincerest Form of Flattery

Imitation is often regarded as the sincerest form of flattery, as the adage goes. Regrettably however, it’s frequently used for the wrong reasons. At SWAG, we subscribe to a different expression; success is not given, it’s earned through hard work and determination.

And while many brands may look the same on the surface, it’s the customer experience that’s key. Rather than solely relying the manufacturer’s word for their product, we encourage you to seek out unbiased feedback by speaking with the caravan community. Consider established brands, with a strong history and large community groups on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Join these groups, and don’t hesitate to ask questions.

We began our journey in 2008. We have established long standing partnerships both here in Australia and abroad. We have invested countless hours on video calls, on planes and sitting in airport lounges and lobbies. We have invested significantly in our designs, development, prototyping, education and retention. We take pride in our SWAG community, knowing they are more than happy to share their experiences with anyone looking to buy.

Much like the Australian automotive industry, there are numerous manufacturers to choose from. Just as you would when buying a new car, it’s important to opt for an established and reputable brand like SWAG when purchasing a caravan.

Buying a caravan is a significant investment so take your time, do your research and feel free to ask us any questions you may have.
