SITTING IDLE: WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOUR NEXT TRIP

Getting ready for your next adventure after your camper, hybrid or off-road caravan has been sitting idle requires some important checks to ensure a smooth and safe journey.

Here are a few key items to check before you head out:

Preparing For Handover Bg Image
01

TYRES

Tyres slowly lose air pressure when sitting idle and the portion of tyre resting on the ground can develop a permanent flat spot which can affect handling.
Inspect for flat spots, cracks, or excessive wear, check pressures and inflate to proper levels.
02

BATTERIES

Batteries may discharge and become damaged. Without periodic use recharging the battery will slowly drain when the caravan sits idle. A completely dead battery can become permanently damaged and require replacement.
Check battery charge level and charge/replace if drained. Ensure all terminals/plugs are clean and clear of any debris.
03

BRAKES

Brake components can rust and seize. If the brakes are not used, moisture and surface rust can build up on the drum, pads and callipers. This can cause the brakes to stick, grind and be less effective. Check components for rust, seizing or sticking.
04

TANKS / WATER PUMPS

Flush water tanks and lines if the caravan has been idle for an extended period. Inspect for leaks.
05

HOSES & SEALS

Rubber components such as hoses and seals can dry out and crack. Without regular use, these parts can deteriorate prematurely.
Inspect all doors, windows, and vent seals for cracks or deterioration. Re-seal or replace any hoses that may have developed leaks while idle.
06

Lights

Test all interior and exterior lights (including brake lights and indicators) to ensure they are functioning correctly.
07

HITCH

Check for any signs of rust, corrosion or metal fatigue. Lubricate any moving parts like the locking mechanism and ensure the coupler engages properly and locks securely.
08

WALK-AROUND

Do a complete walk-around, checking for any other potential issues.
When your caravan sits unused for extended periods, you risk developing issues with the tyres, wheels, battery, brakes and other components that require regular operation and maintenance. This can lead to failures and costly repairs to get you on the road again.
A thorough inspection, including testing all components and service is recommended before hitting the road again. Remember, it's far better to find a fault while you are in your driveway than in the middle of the outback.

Imitation is the Sincerest Form of Flattery

Imitation is often regarded as the sincerest form of flattery, as the adage goes. Regrettably however, it’s frequently used for the wrong reasons. At SWAG, we subscribe to a different expression; success is not given, it’s earned through hard work and determination.

And while many brands may look the same on the surface, it’s the customer experience that’s key. Rather than solely relying the manufacturer’s word for their product, we encourage you to seek out unbiased feedback by speaking with the caravan community. Consider established brands, with a strong history and large community groups on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Join these groups, and don’t hesitate to ask questions.

We began our journey in 2008. We have established long standing partnerships both here in Australia and abroad. We have invested countless hours on video calls, on planes and sitting in airport lounges and lobbies. We have invested significantly in our designs, development, prototyping, education and retention. We take pride in our SWAG community, knowing they are more than happy to share their experiences with anyone looking to buy.

Much like the Australian automotive industry, there are numerous manufacturers to choose from. Just as you would when buying a new car, it’s important to opt for an established and reputable brand like SWAG when purchasing a caravan.

Buying a caravan is a significant investment so take your time, do your research and feel free to ask us any questions you may have.
